Bleach Manga Review

Bleach is a well-known manga series written and illustrated by Tite Kubo, that was first published in August 2001, by Shueisha. Besides that, Bleach has been, since the start, serialized by Weekly Shõnen Jump and thanks to the fame it obtained, Bleach's name was soon franchised and now there's several films, games, merchandise and, of course, the Bleach Anime, that is still airing to this day.

As I write it, Bleach manga has an amazing 42 volumes and 365 chapters and the series end is still not in sight! So, you wonder, what made Bleach such a successful manga?

Well, for starters, the plot and characters has to be one of the main reasons for bleach popularity. The story starts as we meet Ichigo Kurusaki, a young man that has a special skill: he can see ghosts! However he soons find out he's not the only one that has special powers, as he meets with Rukia Kuchiki - a shinigami herself!

After Ichigo's family is attacked by hollows - evil spirits from the netherworld - Ichigo happens to obtain shinigami powers from Rukia, becoming a completely bad ass Soul Reaper - and takes on the duty of defending humans from all evil!

Of course, as in all animes, there are dark forces behind the scenes that plot constantly to fulfill their hidden agendas. Pretty soon, Ichigo and his friends are involved in something bigger than them, but they won't back down from their designs, on the contrary! Courage is a trademark of Bleach's heroes (well, maybe Kon is an exception ^_^') and they will stop at nothing to do what they think is right!

The rest if for me not to tell and for you to find out! I don't want to be accused of being a spoiler, eheh :)

Kurosaki Ichigo

Ichigo - The Star of Bleach!
Ichigo - The Star of Bleach!

Bleach Main Characters - Ichigo and friends

Ichigo Kurosaki- His trademark is his orange hair and he is the main protagonist of Bleach. He has a blunt personality, that reflects itself in his short temper and aggressive behaviours. However, he's quite protective of the ones he loves, stopping at nothing to help them. This part of him eventually leads to his embrace of the full the powers that he obtained to help all of humanity!

His Zanpakutu is Zangetsu (lit. "cutting moon").

Kuchiki Rukia

Rukia - Spirited Shinigami
Rukia - Spirited Shinigami

Rukia Kuchiki- A shinigami with a sad past, Rukia is a spirited soul reaper, that due to circumstances has to adapt herself to the human world, providing several moments of comic relief, especially when she tries to explain her theories with very poor drawing abilities. o__o

She can be very funny, but she actually overburdens herself with a huge amount of responsibility by the ones that surround her, being very guilt-driven and assuming it's all her fault when something bad happens. She is a great actor and can easily understand and be emphatic towards other people feelings, especially Ichigo's.

Her Zanpakuto is Sode no Shirayuki (lit. "Sleeve's white snow").

Yasutoro Sado

Chad delivers quite a punch!
Chad delivers quite a punch!

Yasutora Sado - Chad to friends, this tall and bulky teenager of mexican ascent is very quiet and non-violent (but it wasn't always like that ^_^´). He is bound to an oath to only fight to protect someone, so he avoids using his fists as long as he can. But when he does, oh my!

He his very determined and intelligent even if he doesn't talk very much. And he's a great supporter of his friends, putting himself in harm's way if he needs to.

His abilities are basically related to his armored arms.

Orohime Inoue

Inoue - Bleach's fan service :)
Inoue - Bleach's fan service :)

Orihime Inoue - She shares class with Ichigo and also has a crush on him. Inoue is a babe! Her long hair, hairpins and huge bust are fan drooler atributes of her. Add it to a sensitive, friendly and kind personallity and you've found the cuttest Bleach girl.

Funny aspects of her: she's a little goofy, rarely thinking before becoming involved in things, she has a waaay high imagination and her cooking skills... let's just say are not very good...

Inoue has the power of Shun Shun Rikka (lit. "six flowers of the shielded hibiscus").

Uriiu Ishida

Ishida the Quincy
Ishida the Quincy

Uriu Ishida- A thin and somewhat nerdy dude, Uriu excels at what all nerds excel. He's very bright, topping the grades of his school. But that isn't his only talent. He's a master of sewing (!), tailoring great outfits and is very dexterous overall.

Chivalrous of nature, Uriu has a strong sense of justice always trying to right the wrongs of society, although he sometimes ruins the picture by trying too hard to show off in front of others in order to look cool.

He's a master of the bows, his first one being Quincy Kojaku.

Kon - the funny Beach plush
Kon - the funny Beach plush

Kon- I couldn't ignore this funny character. Kon is one of the most comical dummies I have ever seen in an anime. He's a complete pervert, drawn by big breasts and always trying to look at girls skirts (Inoue and Rukia are main targets). He's a modsoul so he can enter bodies - humans and non-humans as you can see by the image ^__^'

Due to his hentai nature he gets little respect and is often disdained by his companions. Nevertheless he has a good heart deep bottom.

His big ability is jumping. He can jump higher than any Bleach character!

Never really thought of that Aya.

Perhaps, but I'm not really a religious expert. Try posting that one on the forums, you'll probably get a zillion responses eheh :)

anime_nanet, I doubt that anyone on the Hubpages religion forums is interested in Japanese anime. I didn't mean it as a religious question. More like trying to understand the philosophy behind the make-believe universe in this manga.

I only said it as a pun, Aya ^_^'

Answering to your question: IMO, Soul Reapers whole concept is based on the reincarnation of souls and that is also a belief of budists. But Taoism, for instance, also supports this notion and that is a much more common philosophical / religious concept in Japan.

I think the creator of Bleach, Tite Kubo, was most certainly influenced to some extent by religious ideas when creating Bleach. Probably by those two I mentioned.

Altough, Shinigami - the word from where "Soul Reaper" is loosely translated - means deity of death and was imported to Japan from europe in the middle ages (at least that's what it says on Wikipedia), so ironically it's deeper origins lies in Christianity.

As for Uriu being a metaphore to christianism, I think that's stretching it a bit. He can have some crosses, but I think of it as mainly design reasons. You don't see him pray, for instance and all the represented interactions between him and his grandfather (his great role model) don't give a slight hint about that religion. His choice of clothes was an aesthetic decision by the autor to make it contrast from the black robes of Shinigamis.

Well, that's my take on it, at least :)

Sorry for the long answer!

Anime_Nanet, thanks for the answer. This actually clarifies a few issues.

Have you seen DeathNote? It seems to have the same idea of "Deities of Death", but they are much more malevolent than Soul Reapers in Bleach.

This should answer your question. :)

And I agree with you. Shinigamis are way darker in Death Note.
